Hot off the press, after watching the GS4 live launch event we bring to you the actual specifications at the end of this article, but first lets highlight some of the most cool features that we saw in the live launch event:
The Camera
Samsung really showcased the camera at the live event. Its not just about the specifications of each individual camera (there are 2, a 13 megapixel, and 2 megapixel) but how they interacted with each other and some of the cool things you could do with them.
The cameras can be used in sync in what Samsung calls a Dual Camera, where you can use both cameras to record video and take pictures simultaneously. But that is not all. Users, can choose how the smaller front camera image superimposes over the main camera image so the picture taker can be in the photo’s after all. In videos, the camera operator can be set to pop in and out of the videos so as to catch reactions and add an extra dimension to the video .
During Video calling you can simultaneously showing off what you are seeing via the rear camera, which is pretty neat.
The shooting functions of the new camera have some really great features. The camera can be set to take many images in a short space of time and with just a tap of the finger it will let you remove any person in the background that happens to walk past by using collated information from all the images.
Another smart thing the GS4 can do is create collages of a moving person all in the same photo to bring it to life. In the live event they demonstrated this with a tap dancer kid who appeared about 6 times in the same image in different positions just milliseconds apart, and it looked pretty cool.
Gestures
One of the unique features of the the GS4 will be air gestures. You can flip pages or answer the phone simply by waving your hand in front of the phone. In a skeptical question the host asked why you would need that, and the actors on stage made short work of demonstrating a whole host of times when it will be useful, from putting on makeup, to not being able to put down a cup.
Some eye tracking software was demonstrated. If you were watching a video for example and look away from your phone, the video would pause, and automatically resume should you start looking at the screen again. In terms of scrolling, it will do this by a simply tilt of the phone back and forth. We didn’t catch auto scrolling via eye movements being mentioned, but we will certainly update this post if we have overlooked this small point.
Other stuff
There is a whole host of other smaller features, and we will probably cover them in a more comprehensive post in due course. In the meantime we do recommend you watch the launch event which can be viewed on YouTube here. It was one of the best launch events we have watched with a nice mix of humor and entertainment.
