Wireless phone charging

So there have been some rumors floating around today that both Samsung and Apple are going to introduce wireless mobile phone charging .  According to the Digitimes they will be adding wireless charging capability to their flagship models this year.  This follows in the footsteps of Nokia, LG Electronics and HTC.

For Samsung, their flagship model the Galaxy S IV may require the purchase of replacement back covers to access this functionality.  Sources suggest that they will be adopting Qi wireless charging technology run by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC).  The GS4 debut’s on the 14th March and is likely to be a big hit with consumers.

Now whilst the report indicated that Apple’s new 5S may come with wireless capability, it is not known whether this will be available out of the box.  We would suspect that like Samsung this will be something available via an additional add-on.  However, 9to5mac query the capability of the 5S model to adapt to wireless charging with its aluminum shell making such adaptations difficult.  Of course, Apple does hold patents for wireless charging technology, and with all the other major brands offering such a feature we don’t think it will be long before Apple also adopts it.

One of the big features that will make wireless charging capability a must have for mobiles phones is if such charging technology is integrated into tables at coffee shops etc…  You could then simply put your phone on the table to get a top up charge.  In the home however, you would still need a device plugged into the wall for this to work.  It is an added convenience, but the prospect of charging phones whilst out and about is what excites us.
